Grant Muller

The brain child of Micah Martin and Bill Graham, megaproject THEME is an album that mixes more genres than I could possibly enumerate, and is probably best summed as avant pop. After recording one pass at the album using traditional techniques (track the drums, overdub everything else), it became clear that we were a band that plays best when we play together. We scrapped most of the recording and started over as a live trio, recording in one room with a couple of mics. The result was far more lively, far more engaging than its predecessor.

As a drummer this album was my greatest challenge (Aside from the album that we never technically finished, and for good reason). I didn’t write much of the material on the record, and many of the rhythms I was playing were first timers for me (3/8 time over 11/8 in Ghosts, The rad sequence in megaproject THEME (Part 2)). Before working on this album I had hit a plateau as a drummer, since recording it I feel like I’m finally gaining ground again.
